Radiator Valve Stuck? Why TRVs Seize Over the Summer and How to Free One
If one radiator is stone cold while the rest of the house is fine, or one is roasting no matter how far down you wind the head, the valve has almost certainly seized rather than broken. In nearly every case the problem is not the plastic head you can turn but the small metal pin underneath it, which has sat in one position since the heating went off in spring and has corroded into place.
This is one of the first jobs our engineers get called out to every autumn across Kent, usually in the week people first switch the heating on. The good news is that a seized pin is often freeable in a couple of minutes without draining anything or touching a single joint.
Why do radiator valves get stuck?
A thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV, works in two separate parts. The head on top contains a wax or liquid capsule that expands as the room warms and presses down on a spring-loaded pin in the valve body below. That pin is what opens and closes the waterway; the head never touches the water.
That pin spends the whole summer in one fixed position. Once the heating stops running in spring, nothing moves it for five or six months. A fine film of corrosion builds around the shaft where it passes through the valve body, and by September the pin no longer springs back up when the head is lifted off. Add the hard water across west and mid Kent and that film builds faster than it would in a soft water area.
Age makes it much worse. The TRVs we find seized most often are the original ones fitted when the system went in, and decades of scale and system sludge do the rest.
There is a simpler cause worth ruling out too. A head wound fully shut and left all summer holds the pin at the bottom of its travel the whole time, which is the most reliable way there is to seize a valve. It is why our engineers suggest leaving TRVs on a middle setting over the summer rather than closing them off.
Stuck radiator valve symptoms
A seized valve almost never announces itself as a valve fault. It presents as a radiator problem, so people start bleeding and balancing instead.
Stuck closed: the radiator that never warms up
The radiator stays completely cold at both the top and the bottom while every other radiator in the house heats normally. The pipework either side of it is cold too. Turning the head to its highest setting changes nothing, and you may be able to hear the system running happily everywhere else.
The key distinction is that the whole radiator is cold. If it is hot at the bottom and cold across the top, that is trapped air and you want our guide to bleeding your radiators at home instead. If it is hot at the top and cold along the bottom, that is sludge, not a valve.
Stuck open: the radiator that is always roasting
This one is harder to spot because nothing appears to be broken. The radiator heats up perfectly well, but it keeps heating regardless of the room temperature. You can wind the head right down to its frost setting and the radiator carries on putting out full heat.
People usually notice it as a bedroom that has become uncomfortably warm. A TRV stuck open is no longer a control at all, and every other room is competing with it for flow.
Radiator valve stuck open or stuck closed: how to tell which
There is a quick test that separates a seized pin from a failed head, and it needs no tools beyond your fingers.
Unscrew the plastic head by hand, anticlockwise, at the knurled collar where it meets the brass valve body. It should come off as one piece without releasing any water. The pin underneath the head should stand slightly proud of the valve body.
With the head off, the valve is held fully open by its own internal spring, so the radiator should start to heat within a few minutes if the heating is running. If it does, your valve body is fine and the head has failed. If it stays cold, the pin is seized down.
To check the opposite fault, press the pin down gently with your thumb. It should move a small distance and spring straight back up when released. A pin that is immovable, or one that goes down and stays down, is seized.
Before you touch anything: which valve is it?
Every radiator has a valve at each end and they do completely different jobs. The TRV is the one with a numbered head you can turn. At the other end is the lockshield, usually hidden under a plain push-on plastic cap with no numbers.
The lockshield sets how much flow that radiator gets relative to every other radiator in the house. It is not a day-to-day control, and moving it undoes the work of balancing your radiators. If you are hunting a stuck valve, leave the lockshield alone entirely.
How to free a stuck radiator valve pin
With the head removed and the pin identified as seized, the approach our engineers use is patience rather than force.
Grip the pin with a pair of pliers or a small adjustable spanner, lightly, and work it up and down in short movements. You are trying to break the corrosion film around the shaft, not pull the pin out. A drop of penetrating oil at the base of the pin, left for a few minutes, makes a real difference on an older valve.
Once it starts to move, keep working it through its full travel several times until it springs back cleanly on its own every time. Then refit the head and set it to a middle number rather than fully open or fully closed.
What not to do: never lever the pin sideways, never grip it hard enough to mark the shaft, and never try to force the head itself round when it will not turn. A scored or bent pin will not seal, and a head forced past its stop is scrap. Tapping the side of the valve body sharply with the handle of a screwdriver while working the pin sometimes helps, but hitting the valve itself does not.
When a stuck valve needs replacing instead
Be realistic about the ones that are beyond freeing. If there is any sign of water weeping around the spindle, any green or white crust on the brass, or if the pin moves but will not seal once refitted, the valve body needs changing rather than reviving. The same goes for a pin that frees up and seizes again within weeks.
Changing a valve body means either draining down or freezing the pipe, so it is a job worth having done properly. If the valves are all the same age it is usually sensible to do the whole house at once, because a set fitted together tends to fail together.
One important boundary: anything involving the boiler itself, the gas supply or gas components must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Radiator valves are wet-side work, but if your diagnosis is pointing back towards the boiler rather than the radiator, stop and get it looked at properly. Get a seized valve sorted before the cold sets in
A stuck TRV found in September is a small job. The same valve found in January, with every other household in Kent calling at once, is far less convenient. If you are turning the heating on for the first time this year, turn every TRV up and down once and note anything that does not respond.
