What counts as an emergency
Some things genuinely cannot wait, and some things can safely wait until morning at the standard rate. We would rather tell you which is which than sell you a call-out you did not need.
Call us straight away
A burst pipe or a leak you cannot stop, water coming through a ceiling, no water at all, a smell of gas (ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first), or no heating or hot water where someone in the house is elderly, unwell or very young.
Usually safe until morning
A dripping tap, a running toilet, one cold radiator, or a boiler fault in mild weather in an otherwise warm house. We will book you in first thing rather than charge you out-of-hours rates for it.
What to do before we arrive
For any escape of water, turn off your internal stopcock — most often under the kitchen sink, sometimes in a downstairs cupboard or near the front door — then open the cold taps to drain the pipes down. It is worth finding out where yours is now rather than at midnight.
If water is anywhere near electrics, switch off at the consumer unit and do not touch anything wet. If you can smell gas, do not use switches or naked flames, open the windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before you ring us.
Honest out-of-hours charging
Our emergency line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by our own team rather than an overnight answering service taking a message for the morning.
Emergency work is charged on the same clear basis as everything else: £95 plus VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £47.50 plus VAT per hour, plus materials. Weekends and bank holidays are charged at double time. You are told this before we set off, so the bill is never the surprise.
