Radiator Cold at the Bottom but Hot at the Top? Here's What It Means

If a radiator is hot across the top but cold along the bottom, the problem is almost never air — it is sludge settled in the bottom of the radiator, and bleeding it will do nothing. Air rises, so trapped air makes a radiator cold at the top and warm at the bottom. Debris sinks, so it makes a radiator cold at the bottom and hot at the top.

That one distinction saves a lot of wasted effort. It is the single most common thing our engineers get called out to across Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and the rest of Kent after a homeowner has spent an afternoon bleeding radiators that had no air in them in the first place.

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom and hot at the top?

The cold patch is a layer of sludge — properly called magnetite. It is iron oxide, formed inside the system when water sits against steel radiators and steel pipework year after year. It is black, it is fine, and it is heavy, so it drops out of the flowing water and settles in the lowest, slowest part of the circuit. In a radiator, that is the bottom few inches.

Once that layer builds up, hot water simply flows over the top of it. The upper half of the panel still heats normally, which is what makes the fault so recognisable: a clear horizontal line across the radiator, hot above, stone cold below.

You can usually confirm it with your hand. Run it slowly down the panel while the heating has been on for twenty minutes. Sludge gives you a fairly definite band where the heat stops. Air gives you the opposite pattern, and a cold radiator with a cold pipe feeding it is a different fault again — usually a stuck valve rather than anything inside the panel.

Radiators warm at bottom, cold at top — that one you can fix yourself

If it is the other way round, you have air, and this is genuinely a job you can do without calling anyone. Turn the heating off and let the system cool, put a cloth and a small container under the bleed valve at the top corner, and open the valve a quarter turn with a bleed key until the hissing stops and water appears. Close it, and check the boiler pressure afterwards — bleeding lets pressure out, and topping back up is part of the job.

The thing worth paying attention to is how often you are doing it. A radiator that needs bleeding once at the start of the heating season is normal. A radiator that needs bleeding every few weeks is telling you air is getting into the system from somewhere — a small leak drawing air in, a failing automatic air vent, or corrosion producing hydrogen gas inside the radiators themselves. That last one usually goes hand in hand with sludge, and it is worth having looked at rather than living with.

Top of the radiator is hot, bottom is cold — what happens if you ignore it

Nothing dramatic, at first. You lose some of the output of that radiator, the room takes longer to get up to temperature, and the boiler runs longer to compensate. That shows up on the gas bill quietly rather than obviously.

The problem is that the sludge in that radiator is not the only sludge in the system. Whatever has settled in the panel is also circulating through the pump, the diverter valve and the heat exchanger — and those are the expensive parts. On older systems in Kent, particularly houses where the boiler has been swapped at some point but the radiators and pipework never were, the debris load in the system is the thing that eventually kills the new boiler. It is a common reason for a repeat breakdown call on a boiler that is only a few years old.

So a cold-bottomed radiator is worth treating as an early warning about the whole system, not as one awkward radiator.

What actually fixes it

There are three levels of fix, and which one is right depends on how far it has gone.

One radiator affected, everything else fine. The radiator can be taken off the wall, carried outside and flushed through with a hose. It is messy — the water that comes out is jet black — but it is quick and it works, and for a single radiator it is often all that is needed.

Several radiators affected, or the system is slow to warm up. This is where a power flush comes in. A machine is connected to the system and pushes water through at high velocity, in both directions, radiator by radiator, with a cleaning chemical in it to break the deposits down. It is a full-day job on most houses. Done properly it also includes a corrosion inhibitor at the end, which is what stops the whole process starting again.

A system that has been left a long time. Sometimes a flush will bring radiators back to life; sometimes an old radiator is so far gone internally that it never recovers properly and is better replaced. We will tell you honestly which is which when we look — there is no point charging for a flush that will not solve your problem.

We do not put a price for this on the website, because a flush on a two-bed terrace and a flush on a five-bedroom house with sixteen radiators are not the same job. Does a magnetic filter help?

Yes, and it is one of the genuinely worthwhile things you can add to a heating system. A magnetic filter fits on the return pipe near the boiler and catches magnetite before it reaches the heat exchanger. It gets emptied at each service.

It will not clear a system that is already full of sludge — it needs to be fitted alongside a clean, not instead of one — but it keeps a clean system clean, and it protects the most expensive part of your heating. Every new boiler installation we carry out includes one as standard, along with a chemical flush of the existing pipework before the new boiler goes on. Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system is how you end up back where you started.

How to keep it from coming back

  • Get the system serviced annually. Inhibitor levels are checked as part of our boiler service, and inhibitor is what stops magnetite forming in the first place. It does get used up over time, which is why systems that have never been touched are always the worst.
  • Have the filter emptied. If you have one, it needs cleaning out at least yearly. A full filter has stopped working.
  • Balance the radiators. If one radiator always runs cool while others are scalding, the flow is unevenly distributed and the cool one collects debris faster.
  • Do not let the system sit empty or unused for months. Standing water and air together are what drive corrosion.

Anything involving your gas boiler itself — the burner, the flue, the gas supply — must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Draining and flushing radiators is water work, but the moment a job touches the boiler it is a legal requirement, not a preference.
