Get the Heat Output Right Before Anything Else

Style is the easy part. The number that actually matters is the output, and it is the one most often got wrong.

Two things drive it: the heat loss of the room, and the temperature your system runs at. That second point catches people out. Radiator outputs are quoted at a standard test temperature, and if your boiler runs at a lower flow temperature — as a modern condensing boiler should, to work efficiently — the same radiator will give out noticeably less than the figure on the box. Undersize it and the room never quite gets warm on the coldest days.

Where to Put It

Traditionally radiators went under windows, to counter the cold draught coming off the glass. With modern double glazing that matters far less, so you have more freedom than you might think. What has not changed:

• Do not box it in or hide it behind a large sofa. A radiator needs air to circulate around it.
• Radiator covers reduce output, sometimes substantially. Attractive, but they cost you heat.
• Do not fit a thermostatic valve in the same room as the main thermostat. The two fight each other, and the room ends up either too hot or too cold.
