The Benefits of Replacing Your Boiler Instead of Repairing

There comes a point with every boiler where paying to fix it again stops making sense. Working out where that point falls is the question we get asked most often, and the honest answer is that it depends on more than the boiler’s age. Here is how we work it out.

When a Repair Is the Better Value

Plenty of boilers get replaced that had years left in them. A repair is usually the sensible call when:

  • The boiler is under about ten years old and the fault is a single component — a diverter valve, a pump, a fan, a pressure sensor, an expansion vessel.
  • Parts are still readily available. Mainstream brands keep spares in circulation for a long time, and a part on the van tomorrow morning beats a fortnight without heating.
  • It has been reliable up to now. One failure is a failure. Three in a winter is a pattern.
  • The real problem is the system, not the boiler. Cold radiators, sludge and undersized pipework are system faults. Fitting a new boiler will not cure them, and putting one onto a dirty system puts the warranty at risk.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

  • Age plus repeated breakdowns. If we have been out more than once in a season and the unit is well past a decade, you are funding the replacement in instalments.
  • A discontinued part. When the component you need is no longer made, the decision has effectively been taken for you.
  • Anything affecting combustion safety on an older unit. We will not patch up a boiler we would not be happy with in our own house.
  • The repair is a large fraction of a replacement. At that point you are spending most of the money without getting the warranty.

What You Actually Gain by Replacing

A modern condensing boiler recovers heat from the flue gases that an older non-condensing unit threw away, so more of what you pay for reaches your radiators. How much that saves depends on what you are replacing, how well your house holds heat, and how you run the heating — which is why we will talk you through the realistic picture for your property rather than quote a percentage we cannot stand behind.

The other gains are less discussed and often matter more day to day. New controls give you proper room-by-room management. Modern units are considerably quieter. And you get a manufacturer’s warranty, which a repaired old boiler does not come with.

Why We Often Say “Repair”

We would rather keep a customer for fifteen years than sell one boiler. If your unit has life left in it, we will tell you so — and we have talked plenty of people out of a replacement they had already half decided on. Where we do think you are throwing good money after bad, we will say that just as plainly, and show you why.

What It Costs Either Way

Diagnosing a fault is charged at our standard rate: £95 + VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £47.50 + VAT for each hour after that. Any parts are agreed with you before we fit or order them, so nothing lands on your invoice that you have not approved.

If the answer turns out to be a replacement, that is quoted separately — free of charge, in writing, at a fixed price, after we have surveyed the property. The two are never bundled together to nudge you towards the bigger job.
