How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost?

A boiler service with Plumbing Angels is a flat £95+VAT, whatever make the boiler is and wherever in Kent you are. That is the whole price for the visit — there is no separate charge on top for turning up, and if there is a second gas appliance in the house we service it on the same visit at half that.

We are giving you a straight number here because the service is one of the very few jobs where we honestly can. Almost everything else we do — a new boiler, a leak, a radiator that has stopped working — has to be looked at before anyone can sensibly price it, which is why the rest of the site sends you to a free fixed written quote instead of a guess. Servicing is different. The work is defined, the time it takes is predictable, and so the price is the same for everyone.

How Much Is a Boiler Service in the UK?

You will see a wide spread of prices quoted online, and the reason is simple: “boiler service” is not a protected term. Nobody polices what has to happen during one. That means two visits sold under the same name can be completely different pieces of work — one an hour with the case off and an analyser in the flue, the other a fifteen-minute look at the front of the boiler and a sticker on the side.

So when you compare prices, you are usually not comparing like with like. The question worth asking a company is not “how much” but “what will you actually measure, and will I get the readings in writing?” If the answer is vague, the low price is low for a reason.

What Does the £95+VAT Cover?

The visit is a full manufacturer-specified service carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. In practice that means gas tightness and working pressure checked at the meter, the case off, the burner and heat exchanger inspected and cleaned as the manufacturer specifies, the condensate trap cleared, the case seal checked, every safety device tested, and combustion measured with a flue gas analyser rather than eyeballed.

You get the readings, and you get told plainly whether the boiler passed, whether anything is borderline, and whether anything needs attention. Our full boiler service checklist walks through the whole sequence if you want to see what a proper one looks like before you book anyone.

The £95+VAT covers all of that. It does not cover parts, and it does not cover repair work that the service uncovers — more on that below, because it is the part people most often get caught out by.

What Happens If the Service Finds a Fault?

If we find something wrong, we tell you what it is, what it will take to put right, and what it will cost — and you decide. Nothing gets fitted or ordered without your say-so, and any materials are confirmed with you before we buy them.

Small things we can often sort there and then. Anything bigger becomes a separate piece of work, charged on our normal repair rates: £95+VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £47.50+VAT for each hour after that. It is worth being clear that this is how repairs work everywhere, whatever the advertising says — a company quoting a very low service price is not absorbing repair time, it is simply finding it later.

The honest answer is that most services find nothing that needs doing. When they do find something, it is usually far cheaper caught in September than discovered in January, which brings us to the timing.

When Is the Best Time to Book?

Book before the heating goes on, not after. September is comfortably our busiest month for breakdowns — the heating gets switched on for the first time in months and every weakness that has been sitting quietly since spring announces itself at once. Everyone who has been putting off a service tries to book one in the same fortnight, and by then we are prioritising people with no heat at all.

August and early September are the sensible window. The system is off, the diary has room in it, and if the service does turn up a worn part there is time to sort it calmly instead of in the middle of a cold snap. If your boiler is already misbehaving rather than just due a check, that is a repair rather than a service — see boiler breakdowns and repairs for how we handle those.

How Often Should a Boiler Be Serviced?

Once a year, and there are two reasons that matter beyond the obvious safety one.

The first is your warranty. Nearly every manufacturer makes annual servicing a condition of cover, and they check the service record before they pay out. We see boilers three or four years old with a failed part that would have been covered, except the service was skipped in year two — so the customer pays for a repair the manufacturer would have handled. That single missed visit costs far more than the service did.

The second is that servicing catches drift. Boilers do not usually fail suddenly; they run gradually richer, lose pressure a little faster, block a little further each year. Measured annually, that shows up as a trend and gets corrected cheaply. Left alone, it shows up as a breakdown. Our post on how often a boiler should be serviced goes into the exceptions — older appliances and heavily used systems sometimes warrant more.

More Than One Gas Appliance?

If you have a gas fire, a gas hob or a second boiler in the same property, we service the additional appliance on the same visit at 50% off — we are already there, already set up, and already have the analyser out. Mention it when you book so we allow the time.

Landlords should note that a gas safety certificate is a different piece of work from a service, with a different scope and its own legal requirements. The two are often confused and sometimes sold as if they were the same thing. If you need a CP12 for a let property in Kent, ring us and we will explain exactly what the visit covers before you commit to anything — see landlord gas safety certificates for the detail.
