Boiler Service Plan or Pay As You Go? What Cover Actually Buys You Before Winter

A boiler service plan is a monthly payment that bundles an annual service with some form of breakdown cover. Whether it is worth it depends almost entirely on the small print, because a plan pays out on the faults it chooses to cover, and the faults our engineers actually find on Kent boilers each winter are often the ones it excludes.

Here is how we would weigh it up for our own house, written before the first cold snap so you can decide calmly rather than on the morning the heating fails.

What does boiler cover include?

Most plans come in three layers, and it pays to know which one you are being sold:

  • Service-only plans. You pay monthly and get one annual service. No repairs. This is a savings scheme with a badge on it.
  • Boiler and controls cover. The annual service plus repairs to the boiler itself, its thermostat and programmer. Radiators, pipework, the cylinder and any pump outside the boiler case are usually not included.
  • Full central heating cover. Extends to the wider system - radiators, valves, the pump, the cylinder - and sometimes to plumbing and drains as well.

Every one of these carries an excess per claim, a cap on how many claims you can make in a year, and a list of exclusions. The exclusions are where the arguments happen, so read them before anything else.

The exclusions we see catching people out

We are called to plenty of homes across west and mid Kent where the householder has cover and has just been told the fault is not included. The same handful of clauses come up again and again.

Boiler cover and pre-existing faults

If the boiler had a fault before the plan started, or develops one in the first few weeks, the provider can decline the repair. In practice this means a boiler that has been limping along - losing pressure, locking out once a fortnight - does not become someone else’s problem by taking out cover in October. Most plans insist on an inspection or initial service first, and anything found at that visit is your bill.

Sludge, scale and system water

This is the big one in our area. West and mid Kent sit on chalk and the mains supply is hard, so limescale in the heat exchanger and magnetite sludge in the radiators are behind a good many of the breakdowns we attend. Almost every plan excludes damage caused by either. The provider diagnoses the fault, tells you the system needs cleaning, and the power flush that follows is paid for separately.

Boiler cover for old boilers over 10 years old

Age limits are common. Some plans will not take on a boiler past a certain age at all, others accept it but exclude the parts most likely to fail, and most reserve the right to declare the appliance beyond economical repair rather than fix it. If your boiler is fifteen years old, cover is often buying you a diagnosis and a conversation about replacement, not a repair.

Does boiler cover include replacement?

Rarely in the way people expect. Some plans offer a contribution towards a new boiler if yours is written off in the first years of its life; most offer nothing on an older appliance beyond a discount on their own installation. If a new boiler is the real risk you are insuring against, a plan is unlikely to carry it. Our boiler replacement page explains how we quote for that work - a free, fixed written quote once we have seen the job, never a figure over the phone.

Boiler cover with annual service: is the service actually being done?

A plan that includes an annual service only helps if the service happens, and we regularly open up boilers with a provider’s sticker on the case and no sign of anyone having been near it for two or three winters. The provider was waiting for the customer to book; the customer assumed it was automatic.

It matters because the service is the genuinely useful half of the arrangement. A proper boiler service checks combustion, the flue, the seals, the condensate trap and the system pressure, and catches most winter failures in September rather than December. If you have cover, ring and book the service now.

Pay as you go: what it actually costs with us

Without a plan you pay for two things, as and when you need them.

The annual service is a flat £95+VAT, and a second gas appliance such as a fire or hob checked on the same visit is half price. You can book a boiler service online or on 01732 792 454, and our guide on how often a boiler should be serviced explains why once a year is the right rhythm.

Repairs are charged at £95+VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, and £47.50+VAT for each hour after. Within that first hour our engineer will normally have found the fault and can tell you what the part is, and the cost of any part is agreed with you before it is ordered or fitted. There is no excess, no claim limit and no clause about what caused the fault.

We do not quote repair or replacement figures beyond those two rates, because until an engineer has seen the boiler any number is a guess, and a guess sets an expectation nobody can keep.

Is boiler cover worth it?

It depends what you are buying it for, and the honest answer has two halves.

Cover makes sense when:

  • You need a predictable monthly figure and a large unexpected bill would be a genuine problem.
  • The boiler is relatively young, was installed properly and has clean system water, so the exclusions are unlikely to bite.
  • You are a landlord with several properties and want one number for tenants to call. Bear in mind the annual gas safety check is a separate legal duty and is not always part of the plan.
  • You will actually use the annual service.

Pay as you go makes sense when:

  • The boiler is older, or has ever had sludge or scale trouble, because those are exactly the faults a plan will decline.
  • You can set aside the price of a service each year and absorb the occasional repair.
  • You would rather have an engineer who tells you plainly whether the boiler is worth repairing than a claims process that decides for you.

Over a run of trouble-free years a plan usually costs more than the service it includes. Over one bad winter with a covered fault it can pay for itself several times over. Nobody knows in advance which winter is coming, which is why some households are right to want the certainty and others are right to keep the money.

Can I cancel my boiler cover?

Usually yes, though check the notice period and whether a discounted first year ties you into a second. If you do cancel, book a service straight away so the boiler does not go from covered to unchecked in the same month.

Our advice before the heating goes on

Whichever route you take, do two things this month rather than in the first cold week, when every engineer in Kent is booked solid.

First, get the boiler serviced. Under a plan, that means ringing the provider and making them come out. Without one, book with us at £95+VAT and it is done.

Second, if you have a policy, read it with the exclusions list in front of you. Check how old the boiler is, whether the system has ever been power flushed and whether it has a magnetic filter. That tells you how much of the cover would actually apply to your house.

Any work on a gas boiler, under a plan or not, must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Plumbing Angels are registered under number 951167 and cover Kent from our Tonbridge base. If you would like a straight answer on whether your boiler is worth covering, repairing or replacing, call 01732 792 454 or get in touch through our boiler breakdowns and repairs page.
