3. Look at reviews, and read the middling ones rather than only the glowing ones.
4. Get it in writing. A verbal figure is not a quote and commits nobody to anything.
5. Ask how they charge — hourly or fixed — and what happens if the job overruns.

How Plumbers Charge

This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that decides what you actually pay.

Some firms charge by the hour, some quote a fixed price per job, and many do both depending on the work. Hourly is normal for repairs, because nobody can price a fault they have not seen yet. Fixed pricing is normal for installations, where the scope is known once someone has surveyed the job.

Ours works like this:

• Repairs, servicing and general plumbing: £95 + VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £47.50 + VAT for each hour after. That first hour covers getting an engineer and a stocked van to your door and diagnosing the fault properly, whether or not the fix turns out to be quick.
• Boiler service: a flat £95 + VAT, with any additional gas appliance on the same visit at half price.
• New boilers and bathrooms: quoted free, in writing, at a fixed price after we have seen the job.
• Materials: always agreed with you before we fit or order anything.

Getting the Most From a Visit

Because the first hour is billable either way, it pays to make it count. Write down everything that needs attention before you ring — the dripping tap, the loose toilet seat, the radiator that never warms up — and we will work through the list in order of importance. One visit covering four small jobs is far better value than four separate call-outs.
