10 Signs Your Gas Boiler Needs Replacement

As a homeowner, your gas boiler is an essential part of your home’s heating system. While gas boilers are built to last, they do require regular maintenance and repairs to keep them running efficiently. However, there comes a time when repairs are no longer enough, and your gas boiler needs to be replaced. In this article, we will share with you the 10 signs that your gas boiler needs to be replaced.

Age of the boiler

The lifespan of a gas boiler is between 10 and 15 years. If your boiler is approaching or exceeding this lifespan, it’s time to start thinking about replacing it.

Rising energy bills

If you notice a sudden increase in your energy bills, it could be a sign that your boiler is working harder than it needs to, making it less efficient.

Yellow flames

A healthy gas boiler should have a blue flame. If you see a yellow or orange flame, stop using the appliance and get it looked at. It suggests incomplete combustion, which is how carbon monoxide is produced. Sooty or brown staining around the boiler casing points the same way.

Strange noises

If you hear banging, clanking, or gurgling noises coming from your boiler, it’s a sign that there is a fault or damage that needs to be repaired or replaced.

Low water pressure

Low water pressure can be caused by a variety of issues, including a faulty boiler, and can lead to a lack of hot water or heating.

Constant repairs

If you find yourself frequently repairing your boiler, it’s likely that it’s time to replace it altogether.

Radiator issues

If some of your radiators are not heating up, it could be a sign that there is a problem with your boiler.

Pilot light issues

If your pilot light keeps going out or is difficult to light, it could be a sign that your boiler is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.

Leaks

Any water or gas leaks around your boiler should be addressed immediately as they pose a significant danger to your home.

Carbon monoxide detector alarm

If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, treat it as real every time. Open the doors and windows, turn the appliance off at the isolation switch, get everybody out of the house, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — they are free, and they are available at any hour. Do not go back in until someone qualified has told you it is safe. If anyone is feeling dizzy, sick or headachy, seek medical help and say you suspect carbon monoxide.

Which Signs Mean Repair, and Which Mean Replace

Not every item on that list means buying a new boiler, and we would rather be straight with you about which is which.

Usually a repair. A single failed component on a boiler under about ten years old — a diverter valve, a pump, a pressure sensor, an expansion vessel — is normally worth fixing. Low pressure on its own is very often just a leak somewhere on the system or a tired expansion vessel, not a dying boiler.

Usually the system, not the boiler. Radiators cold at the bottom, or some rooms never getting warm, generally means sludge or balancing rather than a boiler at the end of its life. A new boiler will not fix that, and fitting one onto a dirty system risks the warranty.

Usually a replacement. Age combined with repeated breakdowns, or a fault where the part is discontinued, is the point at which repairs stop being good value. So is any fault affecting combustion safety on an older unit.

Diagnosing a boiler fault is charged at our standard rate — £95 + VAT for the first hour, which is always billable, then £47.50 + VAT for each hour after that. Any parts are agreed with you before we fit or order them.

If the answer turns out to be a replacement, the installation is quoted separately: free of charge, in writing, at a fixed price.
