What Goes Under It Matters

Underfloor heating only works properly if the floor is insulated beneath the pipes or mat. Without that, a good share of the heat goes downwards into the slab or the void, and the system spends its life fighting the ground. On a retrofit, that insulation layer is often the deciding factor in whether the job is worth doing.

The floor covering matters too. Tile and stone conduct heat well and suit underfloor heating best. Thick carpet and heavy underlay insulate against it, which is precisely what you do not want.

Floor Height and Doors

The practical catch on any retrofit. Adding insulation, pipes and a screed on top of an existing floor raises its level, sometimes by more than people expect. That has knock-on effects: doors need trimming, thresholds need reworking, and where a room opens onto a hallway you can end up with a step that was not there before.

On a ground floor being dug out and rebuilt anyway, none of this matters. Retrofitting into a finished room is where it becomes the deciding factor.

Slower to Respond

A floor takes considerably longer to warm up and cool down than a radiator. That is not a fault — it is how the system works — but it changes how you run the heating. Underfloor works best left on a steady low setting rather than switched on and off, which is the opposite of how most people use radiators.
